Mr. Reed has a birthday

Yesterday was one for the books. My friend Eliot had a birthday, and we really did it up right. Throughout the night as games were played, and drinks were poured the camera in my hand kept its shutter clicking. Hopefully from these images you’ll understand that my friends and I like to have a good time, and there’s no other time like a birthday to celebrate. Here’s to you Mr. Reed.

This the birthday boy himself.

Here is Eliot blowing out the candles on his cake.

Josh’s house is where the festivities took place. This is Josh.

Harley didn’t mind hanging around too much. I’m sure that he wished it was his birthday.

The whole gang. Even Win With Willard decided to show up!

Adam helps Matt have a good time.

An overview of the table, where Adair and Eliot are talking about something very interesting by the looks of this.

Candace is having a good time.

Dougie Fresh makes an appearance.

Brittney also is having a good time.

These next two images are maybe the best two of the entire night.

Mr. Stafford and myself.

Geison making a strong point on someone needing another drink.

Newest members of the Wu-Tang Clan.

After the glass was broken out of the door accidentally, Charity and Adair make good on their miming techniques.

Happy Birthday buddy, and here’s to next year!

Simply Gymnastic

Yesterday afternoon I shot the Ball State gymnastics competition, the Cardinal Classic, and captured some pretty good stuff. I like playing around with the color tones of images like these, sports pictures specifically, where normally they are pretty bland. Just taking a little different approach to normal sports photography is the idea here.

Winter’s Abandonment part II

Today I went out with my friend Evan who I’ve shot some properties that are either condemned or just left as an eye-sore to the community. This photo safari was the product of going into an old Coke factory. There is only trash in the building at this point, so I’m not sure if this was a bottling facility or what exactly happened here. At any rate, there is much to photograph and explore. This place is pretty wild and it looks like someone has been at least staying here most likely not that long ago. Here are the images.

This is where the roof has collapsed in some areas near the back entrance.

Not sure what rooms these next images are, there was a ton of insulation all over the floor from the ceiling.

I thought that this mesh skeleton coming through the ceiling was pretty interesting looking.

We had rooftop access so of course we explored up there as well. It turned out that there were some cool finds.

And saving the best for last, I really like this silhouette of Evan. There were many of these glass block windows that let in incredible natural light.

The Bonesetters

The Bonesetters are a newer band in the Muncie area, and I’ve had the pleasure of being able to photograph them a couple of times now. These shots are from the latest shoot; when they were doing some recording and overdubbing on their forthcoming EP. They are really nice guys, and I think the photos turned out well showing them in their natural form. Hope you like them, and if you every hear of them playing you should definitely check them out. So here they are.

Truck Fire on Walnut Street

Today my friend Steve called me and asked me if I’d like to go shooting with him for a couple of hours while he had some free time, and of course I obliged. We left my apartment not really knowing what we would come across and it turned out we found some hard news. Driving down Walnut Street not to far from downtown heading northbound we come up to a Ford Explorer with the front end of the truck completely engulfed in flames. I turn my truck around and park so that we could run up to the scene and shoot. We couldn’t believe that we came across this before even the authorities arrived.

When we got to truck the police and fire department had arrived and had hosed off the truck enough that it was now smoldering. These are the best images I think that tell the story of what happened this afternoon:

One of the Muncie Firefighters removing his helmet and face mask in the extremely cold January weather.

Working to put out the fire, firefighters hose down the front of the truck and make sure that the fire has been completely extinguished.

The cold weather didn’t help the situation at all, making it all the more difficult for everyone involved.

The front of the truck after being burned out.

The driver of the vehicle is consoled by Muncie police officers and people who lived near the accident site.

It’s really too bad that this had to happen to the person who owned the vehicle, but I’m glad that I was there to document it. Sometimes fate, if there is fate, works in very strange ways.

Winters’ Abandonment

Today I felt like going out and photographing buildings and structures that have been left for dead or close to it. I found a house that I was somewhat concerned that squatters might be living in, but fortunately all the windows for the most part had been shattered and there wouldn’t be much warmth for anyone seeking shelter. I also drove down to one of the industrial bureaus that Muncie offers and made some exposures there. Overall, I was pretty pleased with how everything turned out today and I’m glad I grabbed my camera before going on my would-be-rather-boring trip of running errands around town. I’ve really been wanting to shoot more black and white lately, so the this type of shooting lends itself toward that in my opinion. Take a peek, and decide for yourself.

Here is the inside of an abandoned home near Seventh Street and Walnut Street. I thought the inside of the house with the natural light coming in through the windows made for really nice textures and feel.

The entrance to the home was completely shattered and overgrown with small trees and branches that had poked through where the glass would’ve been.

I’m not sure what room this is. Maybe this is the living room or perhaps a looking into a bedroom. There are so many stories that this structure could tell, but it’s now in tatters.

Shattered glass and broken windows are something I like to photograph. I’m not entirely sure why, but I think it might be from when I was younger and like to cause mischief like this myself. Now I can still document it, but l get to look at it from a slightly different perspective.

A mask of a skeleton on the floor of one of the small rooms in the house. There weren’t too many items inside that could date any people being in the home, except this mask and a few beer and soda cans lying on the floor.

Textures are always really neat in a building that has been left to rot in the face of nature’s elements. Wallpaper peels, paint cracks and floor boards start to show the inner skeleton of what is still holding the building together.

Not the front of the home from above, but another property left for someone to either forget about or start doing some serious renovations on.

The street sign on the pole is barely holding on, and I feel like that’s what this place is saying too. When industry leaves a small town that so many of its population worked for, hard times aren’t far around the corner.

Sometimes it’s not what is in an image that makes it.

The only color image of the day, but I like it because the tones are very muted and it really shows what today looked like. Winter in Indiana can be dreary, you just have to know where to look.

Punk Rock night at The Melody Inn

The first punk rock night at The Melody Inn in Indianapolis of the year and of the decade for that matter was last night. And it was not a disappointment. One of my good friends’ band, Cmndr, played along with another band from Dayton, Ohio called Rad Company. I love watching shows here, and the only real complaint I have is that drinks are kinda pricey. I mean three bucks for a tall PBR? That’s a bit over the top, but what are you gonna do. Without further ado, here are the pictures.

Hope everyone had a great New Year and check back soon for more

Keeping it traditional

There are only a few holiday traditions that I have anymore mostly due to my family getting older, and life in general. One of these is going to Middletown, Ind. to see the lights hanging over the streets and taking pictures while hanging out on the gazebo with my two of my oldest friends Eliot and Matt. We have been doing this for years now, and we always go on Christmas Eve into Christmas morning. This year was no different in that we did our usual thing, and drove into Middletown only to be fairly disappointed when the full-sized bulbs hanging over the street were not turned on.

Here’s what the scene looked like: This is Main Street, and as usual not really anybody out except for the occasional passerby. When the lights are on, this street looks much like what I would imagine Mayberry from the old Andy Griffeth Show.

The gazebo, on what I suppose is sort of like town square. Only there isn’t a square, only Main Street running in front.

Supposedly the gazebo closes at 10pm, but we’ve never had any trouble. Well, that’s not entirely true. Two years ago I was taking a group portrait of the the three of us, and a cop stopped and asked us what we were doing. After explaining to him that we were only taking pictures and we did this every year he didn’t mind and left us alone.

There was a wire Christmas tree with lights on it in the middle of the gazebo that made for nice texture in the photographs. This is Matt.

And here is Eliot.

Hope everyone had a great holiday and will have a wonderful New Year.
Cheers

Freedom of Seventy-Six

I had the chance to go to Pittsburgh with some old pals on the cheap this last weekend so I couldn’t pass it up. I ended up getting into the Steelers vs. Packers football game for five dollars and managed to get some really nice images along the way. Unfortunately camera’s or backpacks aren’t allowed inside the stadium, or else there would be many more pictures of some of the most intense fans I’ve ever witnessed. I’m not much of a sports fan myself, but when opportunity knocks and I can get into an NFL game for five bucks, it’s a hard thing to pass up.

Long story short, one of the guys we went with had two free hotel rooms in downtown Pittsburgh and had tickets for himself and one other of our friends to get into the game. The other four of us had planned on just hanging out and shooting a little while walking around and exploring the city. Stopping along the way to enjoy various malted beverages to keep ourselves warm of course. While walking with our friends going to the game, we managed to find a ticket scalper who didn’t mind taking five dollars for his tickets.

This is Eliot. He was the driver for the weekend, and did a bang-up job. He and our other pal Andy got into the game for 15 dollars. Not bad. Not bad at all.

This is Andy. He also got into the game for 15 bucks. It looks like he is scheming where we are about to eat lunch with Eliot.

This is Matt, one of the biggest Steelers fans I’ve ever met. He provided the free hotel rooms. He and our other buddy Mark also paid full price for their tickets back in September. Bummer. Despite that, they had a good time.

This is Mark. He is a huge Packers fan. I haven’t had a chance to hang with Mark for awhile, and it was cool being able to hang with all of us together again.

This is Snoop. Don’t let this image fool you; he isn’t a sad-sap, I just liked this picture of him. This was at a bar that we stopped at before we got into the game. He and I got our tickets to the game for five bucks. Thanks Snoop!

This is at the bar where we stopped before the game.

This guy was asking for money on the way to the stadium. I thought he had an interesting look to him, so I snapped this.

This couple was walking along the bridge in front of Three Rivers stadium where the Pirates play baseball.

This is the same bridge, just with the stadium behind it.

This just a couple of fans in the mix that I thought looked interesting.

Our five-dollar ticket source. This guy was willing to sell his tickets to me and Snoop so that he could get another beer.

And finally, I just thought that this house looked nice with all the snow around it. It doesn’t really fit in with the rest of these, but since I took it on the same trip I figured it should get put on the blog.

St. Louis gets a visitor

This past weekend I had the chance to go shoot basketball in St. Louis and stay with an old friend of mine. It was a really great time. I even got to see a nice photo gallery involving an inversion table. So here are some of the images.

This is Glen. He knows how to show a guest a good time.

This is Harry the dog. He’s a golden doodle, which is part golden retriever and part poodle.

Thai food. One of my favorite things about visiting places is trying different foods and beverages.

Walking along the loop.

And here are some of the images from the Lady Cardinals basketball game.
